UNC Lineberger scientists lead cancer genome analysis of breast ...

A team of scientists with The Cancer Genome Atlas program reports their genetic characterization of 800 breast tumors, including finding some of the genetic causes of the most common forms of breast cancer, providing clues for new therapeutic targets, and identifying a molecular similarity between one sub-type of breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

Their findings, which offer a more comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms behind each sub-type of breast cancer, are reported in the September 23, 2012 online edition of the journal Nature.

The researchers, including a large group from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, analyzed tumors using two basic approaches: first, using an unbiased and genome-wide approach, and second, within the context of four previously known molecular sub-types of breast cancer: HER2-enriched, Luminal A, Luminal B and Basal-like. Both approaches arrived at the same conclusions, which suggest that even when given the tremendous genetic diversity of breast cancers, four main subtypes were observed. This study is also the first to integrate information from six analytic technologies, thus providing new insights into these previously defined disease subtypes.

Charles Perou, PhD, corresponding author of the paper, says, "Through the use of multiple different technologies, we were able to collect the most complete picture of breast cancer diversity ever. These studies have important implications for all breast cancer patients and confirm a large number of our previous findings. In particular, we now have a much better picture of the genetic causes of the most common form of breast cancer, namely Estrogen-Receptor positive/Luminal A disease. We also found a stunning similarity between Basal-like breast cancers and ovarian cancers."

"This study has now provided a near complete framework for the genetic causes of breast cancer, which will significantly impact clinical medicine in the coming years as these genetic markers are evaluated as possible markers of therapeutic responsiveness."

Dr. Perou is the May Goldman Shaw Distinguished Professor of Molecular Oncology and a member of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Among the many discoveries include findings of some of the likely genetic causes of the most common form of breast cancer, which is the Estrogen-Receptor positive Luminal A subtype. Luminal A tumors are the number one cause of breast cancer deaths in the USA accounting for approximately 40 percent, and thus, finding the genetic drivers of this subtype is of paramount importance. The TCGA team found that the mutation diversity within this group was the greatest, and that even specific types of mutations within individual genes, were associated with the Luminal A subtype. Some of these mutations may be directly targetable by a drug(s) that is in clinical development, thus possibly offering new options for many patients.

In addition, the team compared basal-like breast tumors (also known as triple-negative breast cancers) with high-grade serous ovarian tumors and found many similarities at the molecular level, suggesting a related origin and similar therapeutic opportunities. These data also suggest that basal-like breast cancer should be considered a different disease than ER-positive/Luminal breast cancer, and in fact, both basal-like breast cancer and ovarian cancer were more similar to each other than either was to ER-positive/Luminal breast cancer.

Dr. Perou adds, "Cancer is, of course, a complex disease that includes many types of alterations, and thus, no one technology can identify all of these alteration; however, by using such a diverse and powerful set of technologies in a coordinated fashion, we were able to identify the vast majority of these alterations."

Katherine Hoadley, PhD, study co-author, explains, "Our ability to compare and integrate data from RNA, microRNA, mutations, protein, DNA methylation, and DNA copy number gave us a multitude of insights about breast cancer. In particular, highlighting how distinct basal-like breast cancers are from all other breast cancers on all data types. These findings suggest that basal-like breast cancer, while arising in the same anatomical location, is potentially a completely different disease."

Dr. Perou describes UNC's role on the TCGA Breast cancer project as "extensive, including generating the RNA expression data, performing integrated data analyses, and playing a major role in the writing of the paper and crafting of the new hypotheses coming from this work."

The High Costs Of Anger In The Workplace : Free Blog Share

Leroy was a superstar in the Real Estate business, producing three times the monthly business of his nearest coworker. He was a driven, highly competitive young man who saw his manager as getting in the way of even higher production.

Tension turned to irritability. Yelling and shouting followed. On the day he was fired, he shoved his manager in front of alarmed coworkers who reported his behavior to HR. Anger management classes were required, along with a one month interim, before reinstatement would be considered.

As this case example illustrates, workplace anger is costly to the employee the company, and coworkers. Studies show that up to 42% of employee time is spent engaging in or trying to resolve conflict. This results in wasted employee time, mistakes, stress, lower morale, hampered performance, and reduced profits and or service.

In fact, in 1993 the national Safe Workplace Institute released a study showing that workplace violence costs $4.2 billion ech year, estimating over 111,000 violent incidents. Further, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, about 500,000 victims of violent crime in the workplace lose an estimated 1.8 million workdays each year.

Clearly, poorly handled anger, frustration and resentment sabotage business productivity.
Was Leroy justified in his anger? What skills or tools should he learn to prevent future episodes? What could management have done to better handle the situation?

TOOL #1-RESPOND INSTEAD OF REACT
Using the tool of ?respond instead of react,? Leroy can clearly learn to control his behavior and communicate needs in a socially acceptable manner without disruptions to work and morale. The issue here is not if he was justified in being angry; it is how to best deal with normal angry feelings. A key ingredient to managing anger is learning to change ?self-talk?? that internal dialog that creates or intensify angry feelings.

From a management perspective, proper anger management skills can enhance conflict resolution, promote personal growth in the employee, reduce employee stress and promote increased workplace harmony.

TOOL #2-STRESS MANAGEMENT
Leroy was clearly under a great deal of stress, much of which was self-imposed. Stress often triggers anger responses. Learning to effective deal with stress can help prevent anger outbursts, as well as reducing employee ?burnout? and hampered performance. Managers should be alert to stressed employees and recommend help, before things get out of hand. In many companies, HR or EAP (employee assistance professionals) can provide you with resources and referrals.

TOOL #3- EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
Popularized by psychologist Daniel Goleman, much research shows that increasing ?EQ? is correlated with emotional control and increased workplace effectiveness.

What is ?EQ? exactly? According to Goleman, it is ?the capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in ourselves and in our relationships.?

Fortunately, skills to improve your emotional intelligence can be learned by both employees and management. The benefit is increased understanding of yourself and others which directly relates to increased productivity and workplace harmony.

TOOL #4- ASSERTIVE COMMUNICATION Communication problems frequently lead to misunderstandings, conflicts with coworkers and hurt feelings which may hamper concentration and work performance.

Assertiveness is not aggression, but a way to communicate so that others clearly understand your needs, concerns, and feelings. It starts with the familiar advice to use ?I? statements instead of ?you? statements which can sound accusatory, and may lead to defensiveness instead of cooperation.

Other communication improvements include acknowledging the concerns and feelings of others in your interaction with them. And, being more sensitive to what others are saying to you ?beneath the surface.?

TOOL #6-ACCEPTANCE
While sometimes workplace anger is manifest in ?exploding,? other times it is born of grievances held by employees over any number of workplace issues. Much research shows that learning to accept and let go of the wrongs done to you can release your anger and resentment. This, in turn, may improve your health, and help you focus on your job instead of your negative feelings.

Is ?acceptance? easy? Of course not. Nor does it mean that you think that whatever happened to you was right, or that you have to like the offending person. What it does mean is ?letting go? of the negative feelings you now experience when you remember a negative experience or you encounter the offending person, so that it no longer affects you.

Obama: Extremists used video as 'excuse' to attack

(AP) ? President Barack Obama said Thursday that extremists used an anti-Islam video as an excuse to assault U.S. interests overseas, including an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

The president's comments came as Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton faced questions from members of the House and Senate about the Sept. 11 attack on the consulate in Benghazi in a series of closed-door classified briefings on Capitol Hill.

Republicans have accused the Obama administration of misreading the assault as the outgrowth of widespread demonstrations in the Middle East over the video. They insisted it was a terrorist attack, a term White House spokesman Jay Carney used on Thursday. Obama did not use the phrase.

"What we do know is that the natural protests that arose because of the outrage over the video were used as an excuse by extremists to see if they can also directly harm U.S. interests," the president said at a candidate forum on the Spanish-language network Univision.

Asked if that meant al-Qaida, Obama said, "We don't know yet."

"We will focus narrowly and forcefully on groups like al-Qaida, the ones that carried out the 9/11 attacks. Those forces have not gone away," the president said.

Clinton also announced that, in line with federal law, she will appoint an independent panel to look at circumstances of the attack in Benghazi that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and there other employees. The so-called Accountability Review Board will be chaired by retired diplomat Thomas Pickering, she said.

Democrats and Republicans emerging from the briefings provided some details about what the administration is still piecing together ? who was responsible, how much of it was planned and what was the security.

Joining Clinton at the back-to-back briefings were Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter.

Rep. Adam Smith of Washington state, the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, said it was "clearly a terrorist attack," but mortars weren't used until six, seven hours into the fight.

"So it seemed like an armed gang that seized an opportunity," Smith said.

Both Smith and Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersburger of Maryland, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said there was no evidence to suggest that the local Libyans at the consulate colluded with the attackers.

Published reports suggested that Sufyan bin Qumu, a former detainee at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, who was transferred to Libya in 2007, was involved. Lawmakers asked about Qumu at the briefing.

"But not directly related to the attack, but as someone who's in that region," Smith said. "They're attempting to establish whether or not he was connected to the people who made the attack. He's certainly a person of interest."

Investigators have found no evidence or intelligence to suggest Qumu was at the conflict, leading it or organizing it, according to a U.S. official, speaking anonymously because he was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly.

Senate Republicans expressed frustration with the information provided at the sessions and disputed the administration's assessment.

"There's increasing amount of evidence that this was a coordinated attack by terrorists," said Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a member of the Foreign Relations Committee. "The movie wasn't the catalyst for this, the catalyst was radical Islamic extremists that wanted to attack the United States and saw an opportunity to do it in Benghazi."

One of the harshest critics of the administration, Sen. John McCain of Arizona, scoffed at the administration's argument that the video set off the assault.

"I'm stunned that they thought this was some kind of spontaneous demonstration," McCain told reporters.

In testimony Wednesday, Matthew Olsen, director of the National Counterterrorism Center, called the incident a "terrorist attack."

Carney echoed that point on Thursday.

"It is, I think, self-evident that what happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack. Our embassy was attacked violently, and the result was four deaths of American officials," he said.

Choosy?lenders delay housing recovery

Jonathan Ernst / Reuters

A U.S. flag decorates a for-sale sign at a home in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington, in this August 21, 2012 file photo. The housing market has been showing signs of recovery, but lending remains tight.

By John W. Schoen, NBC News

Don't let the data fool you, it's going to be a long road back to anything like "normal" for the nation's housing market.

With mortgage rates at the lowest levels in a half century, and?falling, the housing market is crawling?out of the worst recession since the Great Depression.

The latest data, released Wednesday, showed an encouraging pickup last month?in sales of existing homes and in the pace of new construction.

The National Association of Realtors said Wednesday that?home re-sales were up 7.8 percent last month to an annual rate of 4.82 million units, the fastest annual rate since May 2010 and well above analysts' expectations.

Housing starts rose 2.3 percent in August, boosted by single-family home construction, according to a?separate report from the Commerce Department. While the pace of single-family home building was the fastest in more than two years, the overall number was less than expected. Permits to break ground on new construction, seen as a bellwether of future sales, slipped.

Since August 2011, housing starts have jumped by nearly 20 percent. But the gain follows a collapse that saw new home sales crash from a nearly 1.4 million annual rate in mid-2005 to fewer than 300,000 last year.

?If you said that activity rose by twenty percent in any other industry the impression would be that the conditions are booming,? said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors. ?In housing, it is still said to be in a recession.?

That housing recession is holding back the broader economy, according to Federal Reserve?Chairman Ben Bernanke, who told reporters last week that "housing is usually a big part of the recovery process" but has been "one of the missing pistons in the engine."

Though homebuilders are generally becoming more upbeat, they still face ?a lot of roadblocks,? according to David Crowe, chief economist at the National Association?of?Home Builders.

?We have tight credit for buyers and builders, we have tough appraisals that are often busting a contract and now builders are facing higher prices for some of the building materials,? he said. ?I think all of those will keep that recovery continuing to be a modest one.?

Crowe said the industry?also will be hit with another major setback if Congress decides to eliminate the deduction for home mortgage interest as part of a broad tax reform package. That, he said, would throw ?a pretty awful wrench? into the housing market.

Home sales and construction all in the positive in August, reports CNBC's Diana Olick.

?Many people, even if they don't deduct their interest at the moment, have (done so) at some point during their career of owning their home,? he said. ?If you take that away, you take away a significant aid, particularly to the middle class to be able to afford that interest payment.?

To help lower those interest payments and help revive the economy, the Fed announced last week that it will begin buying $40 billion worth of mortgage bonds a month, hoping to drive mortgage rates lower and spur more home buying.

It remains to be seen, though, how much of an impact those lower rates will have. Since the Fed began its historic campaign to drive rates to the floor to heal the damage from the financial collapse of 2008, mortgage rates have been setting record lows. ?

But while low rates may encourage home buyers to go shopping, cheap money has had little impact on choosy lenders who are demanding much better credit to approve a mortgage application.

?A further fall in mortgage rates is unlikely to trigger a rapid housing recovery when rates are already at record lows and when tight credit conditions mean many households cannot qualify for a new loan," said Capital Economics economists Paul Ashworth and Paul Dales in a report on the housing market.

The economists note that in the second quarter, while the average household?s FICO score was 690, lenders were demanding a score of 745 to approve a mortgage. And anecdotal reports suggest that the lending volume is also being held back by ?administrative problems at banks, with the time taken to approve a mortgage application climbing to three months from the normal one (month),? they said.

Tighter credit conditions were confirmed by a Fed report Tuesday showing that banks are demanding higher credit scores to qualify for loans.

"Despite the surge in the government-backed share of home purchase loans ... credit scores of home-purchase borrowers are considerably higher now than at any point in the past 12 years," the Fed said.

Tight credit is one reason more than a quarter of existing-home sales went to buyers who put up cash, according to the latest monthly? data.

To be sure, lower mortgage rates have helped millions of households save on interest payments by refinancing their existing mortgages. But with more than 20 percent of borrowers underwater on their current mortgage, millions more can?t qualify to refinance?at a lower rate because they don?t have enough home equity to qualify.

Tight credit and the large pool of underwater borrowers slowed the volume of U.S. home lending by 10 percent last year to the lowest level since 1995, according to a report Tuesday by a group of federal bank regulators.

Cities with the most homes in foreclosure

Some 7.1 million home loans were made in 2011, down from 7.9 million the previous year, according to the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council. Refinancing of home loans dropped 13 percent during the year, while new mortgages dropped 5 percent, the report found.

In 2011, conventional mortgage applications by blacks and Hispanics were rejected more than those submitted by non-Hispanic whites, although the differences between rejection rates were similar to those found in previous years, the FFIEC said. Denial rates were 30.9 percent for blacks, 21.7 percent for Hispanics,14.8 percent for Asians, and 11.9 percent for non-Hispanic whites.

The Fed said the data does not include enough information "to determine the extent to which these differences reflect illegal discrimination."

Borrowers with lower incomes were also more likely to receive higher-priced loans, according to the Fed's analysis.

Areas hardest hit by the foreclosure crisis saw the biggest drop in lending, according to the report.

"The steeper decline in mortgage credit flows to highly distressed areas continues a trend that has been observed since the onset of the housing market downturn," the report said.

Study links breast cancer risk to early-life diet and metabolic syndrome

ScienceDaily (Sep. 17, 2012) ? Striking new evidence suggesting that diet and related factors early in life can boost the risk for breast cancer -- totally independent of the body's production of the hormone estrogen -- has been uncovered by a team of researchers at the University of California, Davis.

The findings provide new insights into the processes that regulate normal breast development, which can impact the risk of developing breast cancer later in life. The study will be published Sept. 17 in the early edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"It's long been assumed that circulating estrogens from the ovaries, which underlie normal female reproductive development, were crucial for the onset of breast growth and development," said Russ Hovey, a UC Davis associate professor of animal science and senior author on the study.

"Our findings, however, suggest that diet and shifts in body metabolism that parallel changes seen during obesity and Type 2 diabetes can also stimulate breast growth entirely independent of estrogen's effects," he said.

The studies with mice used a diet supplemented with a form of the fatty acid known as 10, 12 conjugated linoleic acid or 10, 12 CLA, which mimics specific aspects of a broader metabolic syndrome.

In humans, this syndrome is linked to a broad array of changes associated with obesity that can increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The 10, 12 CLA was added to the diet of the test group of mice because it is known to disrupt normal metabolic processes. In this study, the supplement stimulated the mammary ducts to grow, despite the fact that the mice lacked estrogen.

The researchers demonstrated that the diet-induced breast development also increased the formation of mammary tumors in some of the mice.

They ruled out a role for estrogen as the possible cause for how diet increased growth of the breast tissues by giving the supplement to male mice and to female mice in which the function of estrogen was blocked.

The research team also discovered that various mouse strains responded differently to the dietary supplement despite similar metabolic changes, suggesting that there may be a genetic component for how diet and related metabolic changes affect breast cancer risk in different populations, Hovey said.

He noted that results from the study would likely have significant implications for better understanding human breast development before puberty and after menopause, when estrogens are less present.

"The findings of this study are particularly important when we superimpose them on data showing that girls are experiencing breast development at earlier ages, coincident with a growing epidemic of childhood obesity," Hovey said.

Adam Lock, an assistant professor of dairy cattle nutrition at Michigan State University, was co-principal investigator with Hovey on the original Dairy Management Inc. grant that supported studies leading to the PNAS publication.

"The biology of conjugated linoleic acid fatty acids has stimulated much scientific and public interest over the last two decades," said Lock. "These recent findings will further our understanding of the biology of this specific CLA isomer and also further advance our understanding of the role of bioactive fatty acids in health maintenance and disease prevention."

Other members of the research team are graduate students Grace Berryhill and Julia Gloviczki, Project Scientist Josephine Trott, postdoctoral researchers Lucila Aimo and Whitney Petrie, undergraduate student Carly Paul, and Professor Robert Cardiff, all of UC Davis; and Research Assistant Professor Jana Kraft of the University of Vermont.

The study was supported in part by Dairy Management Inc., the UC Davis Cancer Center and the Department of Defense.

The Short Sale Process Simplified | Real Estate Investing Facts

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

You hear a lot about short sales these days. If you are a buyer, chances are you have come across several short sale properties that are listed on the market in your area. In fact in some condo buildings or subdivisions, there are many properties that are short sales, especially if they were purchased during 2004 through 2006 when the market was at its height.

Definition of short sale

investment properties at Real Estate Matchmaker

A short sales occurs when the seller owes more on their mortgage than their home is worth in today?s market. The seller?s lender must approve the sale to the new buyer before the transaction can take place. The seller?s lender will write off the unpaid balance of the loan deducting the sale price from the mortgage balance. The seller then owes nothing and can walk away from the home.

short sale Process

First step in a short sale process contacting the lender to see if the property qualifies for a short sale. If the owner/borrower has other assets which would enable them to pay off their mortgage, then the lender will not approve the short sale and could get a deficiency judgment against the homeowner for the difference of the amount owed on the loan and the sale price of the home. Working with a short-sale savvy investor is key in getting your short sale approved with no deficiency judgment.

If the property does qualify, then the owner will generally contact an investment company to work with directly or list it with a Realtor and have the Realtor market the property for sale to potential buyers. Once an offer is negotiated between the seller and the buyer/investor, the offer will be presented to the seller?s lender for approval. There may be more than one offer presented to the lender, and the lender can choose the highest and best offer.

Who Qualifies for a short sale?

A seller that can prove a financial hardship and substantiate why they cannot make their current mortgage payments as a result of a job loss, wage reduction, an illness or divorce generally will qualify for a short sale providing they do not have other assets that would enable them to pay off their mortgage. A decline in home values is another reason why the seller would not be able to sell the home other than in a short sale because they would not be able to get enough money from the proceeds of the sale to pay the mortgage balance off.

Information to Provide the Lender

The lender will require a hardship letter and proof of the financial hardship such as copies of the last two paycheck stubs of the homeowner, two months bank statements, last two year?s tax returns and copies of W-2?s or 1099?s. They will also need a copy of the brokerage listing agreement and the purchase and sale agreement, and both will require the lender?s approval before the sale can be completed. If the attorney or other third party is going to negotiate the short sale, then the seller will need to sign an authorization letter allowing the lender to negotiate with the third party on their behalf and submit that with the other documentation referenced above.

Time Frame

A short sale approval can take on average anywhere from 60 days to 90 days or longer. The lender may counter the buyer?s offer and want more money so the buyer should be prepared that even though the seller accepted the buyer?s offer it is contingent on the lender?s approval. The buyer will need to be patient. Many short sales fall apart before the lenders have even assigned a negotiator to the property because the process take so long the buyers find other properties or just get tired of waiting.

Advantages

The advantage of a short sale is that the owner can save their home from foreclosure and their credit. The seller simply walks away at the closing not owing any money on their mortgage. Of course, they have lost their equity in the property by that time. A foreclosure costs the lender on an average $ 50,000 so it is smarter for the lender to approve the short sale and save the time and money of going through a foreclosure proceeding. The buyer/investor generally gets to purchase a property at or below market value. It?s a win win situation for all parties.

Disadvantages

The biggest disadvantage of a short sale is the time involved. If the seller is too far behind in their mortgage payments, there is a possibility that the home will go to foreclosure anyway even if the lender says the property qualifies, if there is no offer from a buyer to purchase the property within the time frame needed to stop the foreclosure. There is no guarantee that the lender is going to approve the buyer?s offer anyway, and the home may still go to foreclosure.

Many Realtors do not like to show short sale properties because there is such a long waiting period for the transaction to be approved and for the Realtor to get their commission. It may take longer for the seller to find a buyer for their property if buyers and Realtors are hesitant to look at short sale properties. Generally investors are good candidates for short sale properties because they have the time and patience to wait for the lender?s decision. Even so about half of the short sales under contract don?t close because either the buyer walks away or the bank and the buyer/investor cannot agree upon a purchase price acceptable to both parties.

However, a short sale is a much better alternative for the seller than simply waiting for the lender to foreclose on the property.

Slow, costly road to unity in Syria's revolt

AMMAN (Reuters) - Until Syrian forces stormed the Damascus suburb of Daraya last month, rebels ran the affairs of the working class town in a display of grassroots unity which has eluded President Bashar al-Assad's opponents on a national level.

The nascent self-rule in Daraya mirrored arrangements in towns across Syria, particularly northern rural districts, which have fallen out of Assad's control during the 18-month uprising.

"Independent judges presided over the court and rebels took over police duties," said Saleh Nasser, an underground activist who helped set up a civilian administration alongside the rebels to oversee security and municipal services. "Daraya threatened to become a model of a civilized alternative to Assad."

That local coordination, built around a rebel move away from tight, small fighting cells into bigger units in towns and cities, has failed to translate into an organizational structure offering a national alternative to Assad's rule, according to opposition leaders and diplomats following the revolt.

But with the divided opposition in exile failing to secure international recognition and some rebel-held towns gaining a degree of autonomy, Western powers are paying increasing attention to the rebel leaders on the ground.

Local groups with names such as ?Revolution Command Council' are mostly composed of armed rebels and civilian figures such as professors, doctors and lawyers who were at the forefront of the street protest movement before it turned into an armed revolt.

These grassroots organizations, diplomats who follow the rebellion say, are more cohesive than military groupings set up by army officers who defected and fled to Turkey or Jordan, such as a recently announced 'National Army' headed by General Mohammad Haj Ali, the most senior military officer to defect.

The revolt against Assad began in March last year as mainly peaceful demonstrations for reform. Protests rapidly hardened into calls for Assad's overthrow and, faced with a violent military crackdown, the uprising became an armed insurgency. Syrian authorities say they are fighting Islamist "terrorists" backed by western and Sunni Arab nations for geopolitical gain.

OUTSIDERS HAVE LITTLE INFLUENCE

A Western diplomat who has monitored the growing militarization of the revolt said military officers outside Syria such as Ali and Manaf Tlas - a former Assad confidante and a brigadier general in the Republican Guards who defected in July - have no substantial influence over the rebels.

"Tlas' defection came too little too late. Fighters tend not to have much respect for officers sitting in exile who seem to be more interested in self-promotion," the diplomat said.

"People also do not want another dictator from the army."

Instead, the disparate rebels groups inside the country have gradually improved their own coordination, as shown by recent simultaneous attacks on military airports.

"It is going slowly. The likely scenario is that the organization of the opposition on the inside will keep improving and just before the regime collapses it may manage to sit together in a sort of a national conference to prevent the country falling into fiefdoms," the diplomat said.

Fawaz Tello, a veteran opposition campaigner, said it was too late to establish a unified command for the revolt and the nearest that could be hoped for was tighter coordination between the different forces.

Tello, who is well connected with rebels in Damascus, said a loose structure was emerging across the country under which rebels form councils with civilian liaison officers and coordinate within larger groups.

"Let's stop kidding ourselves. Ask any politician to give you a political and military map of the forces on the ground. Impossible. These groups are changing and militant and are affected by changing sources of financing," he said.

Speaking from Berlin, Tello said that countries playing a role in financing the revolt, or acting as a conduit for weapons, such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, could play a larger role in bringing the opposition on the inside together.

"We cannot continue to have anyone going to the Saudis or Qataris and getting a few million dollars and forming his own group and buy allegiances," he said.

AVOIDING ISLAMISATION

Afaq Ahmad, an intelligence operative who defected from Air Force Intelligence, said the emergence of a powerful general to lead the revolt was unlikely because Assad had sidelined army officers from the Sunni Muslim majority.

The opposition, he said, should focus on attracting professional officers from Assad's Alawite sect, who dominate the armed forces and who may be unhappy with the crackdown on the revolt but wary of its increasing Islamisation.

"The opposition has to project itself as a national movement and not allow the Islamists to hijack it," he said.

Both the rebel brigades and their affiliated civilian units have fallen increasingly under the influence of Islamists, who are supported by Arab jihadists finding their way to Syria.

In Damascus, two Islamist-leaning federations of rebel organisations with civilian membership have emerged: Ansar al-Islam and the smaller Tahrir al-Sham. But they lack a single leader and decisions are taken by consensus, according to opposition activists helping streamline the resistance.

Rebels in Douma, a conservative suburb northeast of Damascus, have refused to join the new groupings. They are led by a charismatic cleric, Abu Suleiman Taffour.

To the north, in Idlib province, rebels have agreed with local organisations in several towns to stay out of civic life and enforce the decisions of committees comprised of elders and activists in each town, according to Sameh al-Hamwi, a leading opposition campaigner who recently toured Idlib.

He said that in towns such as Khan al-Sibil and Binnig, rebels avoid carrying weapons in the streets and are mostly based in compounds on the outskirts. A civic administration is fixing power lines damaged by army shelling.

Hamwi said Assad was trying to crush those signs of emerging civic rule.

"The army does not have the troops on the ground to enter these towns, so it is shelling them," he said, adding that in his own city of Hama, army roadblocks had been set up every 500 metres to prevent the establishment of a local administration.

Daraya, the district on the outskirts of Damascus, was fiercely targeted partly because of the success of its attempt at self-rule so close to Assad's seat of power, according to opposition campaigners.

They said the attack last month, by mostly Alawite Republican Guards on the Sunni town, killed at least 700 people and that many of those killed were summarily executed.

Despite Wisconsin saving $2.1 Billion on Health Insurance, Dumb Ron

While dumb Ron Johnson tries to?sabotage the Affordable Care Act by allowing businesses the ability to drop employee health coverage at the expense of the nations citizens, and get off scot free, his panic over the laws effect continues to conflict with reality and good news:
WisPolitics: Americans have saved an estimated $2.1 billion on health insurance premiums as a result of two important provisions of Obamacare ? officially called the Affordable Care Act ? that protect citizens from excessive premiums. This includes 288,984 Wisconsin residents who have saved a total of $14,551,793.
But RoJo has a different set of numbers, something he researched at the nonpartisan Romney Campaign (I kid you not, see below):
?In 2008, then-Senator Barack Obama promised that as President, he would reduce health insurance premiums by $2,500 per family by 2012, and that anyone who liked his or her current plan would be able to keep it. But instead of falling by $2,500 per family, premiums have now risen by over $3,000 ? a broken promise that is costing the average American family $5,500 annually. ?
After doing my own research, I turned up 4?Pinocchio's from July 2012, on numbers that were identical to Ron Johnson's figures last week:
WaPo: The (Johnson)/Romney campaign cites a statement from?a 2007 speech??by Obama, but it?s a pledge that was repeated often: ?When I am president, we will have universal health care in this country by the end of my first term in office. It's a plan that will cover every American and cut the cost of a typical family's premiums by $2,500 a year.? This particular quote is not very clear on when the savings would be realized, but in?another speech?, in 2008, Obama suggested it would be at the end of his first term ? though to be fair, it is not clear if he is talking about the savings or enacting a new health care law.
Obama was talking about realizing that savings once reform was in place. But Johnson?s inability to think any deeper than the Romney Campaigns website misses something else entirely:
Obama?s pledge was not saying premiums would fall by that amount, as Romney asserts, but that costs would be that much lower than anticipated. In other words, if premiums were expected to rise by $5,000, they would only rise by $2,500 ? that?s what Obama?s pledge meant, even if he was not too clear about it.
That was in 2008, when Obama had an entirely different plan than what was finally cobbled together in 2010. The Washington Post Fact Checker went on to say:
The Romney campaign?s math is nonsensical. First of all, the Kaiser survey is conducted from January to May each year, so starting with the 2008 date makes little sense, since that is still George W. Bush?s term. Then the health care law was not passed until 2010, so the first year in which any impact could be seen from the law was in 2011. But, as the Kaiser report notes, most of the provisions of the new law will not take effect in 2014.?

Remember during Johnson's campaign when he said it was time the U.S. Senate had its first accountant elected into office. How's that working out?

Isn't it time to start running a candidate against this numskull??

Cool Mom Picks - 5 energy-boosting drink recipes, all coffee ...

I'd completely forgotten how much energy--and energy-boosting drinks--it takes to keep our school year routine running smoothly. Summer wiped away the evidence of our hectic September-May life, but, just like having a newborn again, back-to-school reality hit hard and fast. I need energy. Stat.

Coffee is my morning pick-me-up, but despite the many amazing coffee drinks?the world has to offer, I'm determined to keep my intake to one (or maybe two) cups per day. When that's not enough, I plan on turning to these healthy, energy-boosting caffeine drink alternatives. And (hey, wake up!) I think you should check them out, too. -Stacie

Ginseng?

?

There are two main kinds of ginseng: Siberian and American. Strangely, the Siberian kind is what's referred to simply as "ginseng" here in the States. Although both are said to promote energy, they are derived from different plants. Siberian ginseng is most commonly available as tea, usually in bags or as a dried root that can be steeped in hot water. Ginseng can be bitter, so try steeping it in hot water along with ginger and citrus.

Recipe: Try this?Ginger Lemon Infusion from my own site, One Hungry Mama.

Green Tea

Although green tea has caffeine, it's less than found in coffee, making it a nice afternoon pick-me-up that's also packed with antioxidants. The buzz isn't quite the same as what you get with a cup of joe, but in some ways, it's waaaay nicer. Calmer, if you can imagine. And you can feel good about sipping on this kind of energy boost, since green tea retains more nutrients than most other teas. Bonus points: green tea is even said to help increase metabolism.

Recipe: Brew some Green Tea plain, or while it's still warm out, combine?iced green tea with tamarind juice?instead of sugar. It's delicious!

Matcha or Chai Latte

If you're looking for something more like a coffeehouse treat, try a latte made with matcha or chai tea. Matcha is a green tea powder historically used to make ceremonial drinks in Japan. Since your afternoon latte is kind of a ceremony, why not pour steamed milk over the powder and whisk along with your favorite sweetener?

Recipe: Check out this?Matcha Latte?recipe from Evan's Kitchen Ramblings for an especially cool trick for making foam.?

Prefer chai over green tea? No problem. Skip the pre-made chai drinks and steep a chai tea bag in hot water. Mix with steamed milk and honey and you're good to go. Only have plain black tea bags? Add a little spice and you can use them to make a?chai latte, too.

Super Boosted Smoothie

I have no scientific research to back me up, but I can tell you that smoothies made with a couple of scoops of?Vega Whole Food Smoothie Infusion?make me feel fantastic! I first heard about Vega's smoothie infusions from?Lucinda Scala Quinn,?cookbook author extraordinaire?and Executive Food Editor at Martha Stewart Living, and she did not let me down. Packed with raw organic super foods including yellow pea powder, flax seeds, barley grass, spinach and sprouted broccoli, this stuff makes a mean afternoon health and energy boost. It's also free and clear of dairy, gluten, soy and wheat.

Recipe: Any of these great fruit smoothie recipes can be made with an Infusion boost, or just start with your own favorite concoction. You'll make it through the day, no problem!

Senate Races 2012: Conservative Groups Seek GOP Senate Control With Tens Of Millions In Ads

WASHINGTON -- All eyes are fixed on the money race between President Barack Obama, Republican nominee Mitt Romney and the outside groups cheering them on with attack ads. That attention may allow one of the biggest money stories in the 2012 election to fly under the radar. In the fight for control of the Senate, a coalition of conservative groups have pummelled Democratic senators and candidates in the nation's closest races for more than a year in an attempt to wrest control of the chamber and make Sen. Mitch McConnell the next Majority Leader.

Since the beginning of last year, these conservative groups have poured more than $50 million into ads -- both those reported to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and so-called "issue" ads that are not -- targeting seven of the closest Senate races in the country, according to sources in Democratic campaigns, other ad-watching sources, and a series of publicly-reported figures and those collected from news reports and press releases. This compares to the slightly more than $20 million spent by liberal-allied groups on ads in these seven races.

The seven Senate races surveyed include Missouri, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin. Three have already seen more than $10 million spent against the Democratic candidate, and in only one race is the disparity between conservative outside group spending and liberal outside group spending less than $1 million.

"It's certainly taking a toll," said Justin Baransky, communications director for Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown's campaign. "Almost all polls show the gap in the race closing."

Brown, a first-term senator from Ohio, has seen the most ad spending by outside groups of anyone outside of the presidential race. According to the campaign, conservative groups have spent $17.1 million to knock him off. Supporters of Brown have spent only $4.1 million. He has held a steady lead over State Treasurer Josh Mandel, although the polls are tightening.

The campaign believes the closing gap is solely due to the outside spending. "It really is the only reason that Mandel has a chance in this race," Baransky said.

In Virginia, former Democratic Gov. Tim Kaine has already seen more than $10 million spent against him. Conservative groups had spent $10 million against Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill before her opponent, Rep. Todd Akin, began to discuss "legitimate rape." Nearly $6 million in outside group ads have already gone up against Montana Sen. Jon Tester. Rep. Shelley Berkley, running for Senate in Nevada, has been targeted by $4.8 million in outside group ads, and Rep. Tammy Baldwin, running in Wisconsin, has seen $4.5 million in ads against her. Heidi Heitkamp, the Democratic candidate in North Dakota, has seen $1.9 million spent against her.

"Before we ever spent a dollar on air running a positive ad for our candidate, nearly $10 million had been spent against us," said Brandi Hoffine, communications director for the Kaine campaign. "In some campaigns in the past that's been the total ad [amount] spent altogether. So, it's definitely a marked change from the past."

Meanwhile, liberal-allied groups have had far fewer funds than their conservative counterparts to respond. They have spent the most, $4.8 million, in Montana to help Tester. Baldwin, Berkley and Kaine have all seen more than $3 million from liberal groups. In North Dakota, Heitkamp has seen $1.1 million in aid from liberal groups, including the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, making her race the only one where the disparity in outside spending is less than $1 million.

The conservative groups, which include the Karl Rove-founded Crossroads GPS, the Koch brothers-funded Americans for Prosperity, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the 60 Plus Association and the American Future Fund, have run ads that mostly attempt to tie the target to the policies of President Obama, policies that many of them voted for. These include the stimulus, health care reform and other nebulous "job-killing regulations."

In some cases, the ads have targeted local or personal issues. In Nevada, the majority of the outside group ads have focused on an ethics investigation into Rep. Berkley and, in Virginia, one ad claims that Kaine cut K-12 education funding to reduce the state's debt when he was governor.

The spending is helping to cut into the fundraising advantage that many of the Democratic senators and candidates have over their rivals.

The campaigns of Brown, Kaine, McCaskill, Berkley, Baldwin and Tester have spent close to or more than twice the amount of their respective Republican opponents, but when outside spending, from both conservative groups opposing and liberal groups supporting, is factored in, those leads are wiped out. Only Berkley, Baldwin and Tester remain the biggest spenders in their races with outside spending factored in, while Brown is down $10 million and Kaine and McCaskill find themselves down $3 million and $2 million, respectively.

The incidence of these ads was studied by the Wesleyan Media Project, and the results were released on Wednesday. The report shows that, from June 1 through September 8, outside groups accounted for 82 percent of all ads in Virginia and 65 percent of all ads in Ohio. They were also responsible for 48 percent of all ads in Nevada and North Dakota, 35 percent in Wisconsin, 29 percent in Missouri and 28 percent in Montana.

The Wesleyan Media Project's Michael Franz, an associate professor at Bowdoin College, explained the overall findings. "From June 1st, outside spending for Republicans has accounted for about a third of the congressional ads that are out there and about a quarter of Democratic ads. And those are the highest we've seen if we're comparing to 2008 and 2010," he said.

In past years, the majority of this outside spending comes in these finals months prior to the November election. That means that these totals will only go up.

The Brown campaign is preparing for around $25 million to be spent in his race. "This is really a test case in this race and a test case post-Citizens United about whether a candidate and a campaign even matters anymore," Baransky said.

If the 2010 midterm election, the first since the Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling opened the door to unlimited outside group money, is any indication, the other top races should see millions more soon enough.

Fear & Creativity | Self improvement tips

My fears are most powerful when they?re simmering just under the surface of my awareness. I?m resistant to a new idea, I?m defensive about holding on to my old ways, I feel excited and panicked at the same time ? these are sure-fire signs that there?s some fear under there.

Shining a spotlight on my fear has been the best (and only) way to get to the other side of it.

?Perhaps everything that frightens us is, in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love? ? Ranier Maria Rilke

My fear is there for a good reason ? to protect me. If I can have compassion for my fear, and understand what it?s looking for, I?ll be more ready to let it go.

I?ve been thinking about how fear and creativity often go hand in hand. As creative artists, what is our fear looking for? What does it think it?s protecting us from? In exploring these questions I decided to brush up on Abraham Maslow?s ?Hierarchy of Needs?.

Abraham Maslow suggested that all human beings have the same basic needs, and that we spend our lives striving to meet them. His famous hierarchy of needs explains that at the basest level we need protection from the elements, food, water and other physiological needs.

Then, we need to feel safety and security within our family, our home and in our place in the world around us. We need to feel that we fit in and understand where we fit in and how everything works.

Next, we need to feel love and belonging ? that we?re accepted and appreciated.

We need to feel competent and masterful and that we?re being recognized for our talents.

Finally, when all of those needs are met, we strive for the ?top? level, ?Self-Actualization? ? to really live up to our highest potential, to feel a oneness with God, the universe and all of our fellow travelers on this Earth.

For some of us, long after the needs HAVE been met, we still fear losing them and having to meet them all over again.

Maybe that?s why creating our art can evoke so much fear. Creativity is a direct form of self-actualization. When you?re feeling fear about putting your creative ideas into motion, which of Maslow?s needs are you concerned about meeting or losing?

* If I commit fully to my art then I won?t be able to support myself financially ? I could lose everything and be penniless and homeless

* If I put my creations out into the world, people may not like them ? that means they won?t like me, they may laugh at

me, I won?t fit in

* If no one likes my work, I won?t fit in. No one loves, understands or knows me. I?m not fulfilling a need in the world ? no one needs me. I?m not serving a purpose.

* If I try to create, I could make a mistake. I?ll feel stupid and no one will like me.

To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong. ? Joseph Chilton Pearce

* If I go another year without trying to get my creative projects off the ground, I may never break free of my limitations, and I may live the rest of my life with unrealized potential. I may die with my creativity still inside of me.

Even the fear of death is nothing compared to the fear of not having lived authentically and fully. ? Frances Moore Lappe

Have I missed any? Probably. Of course each of us have our own unique fears ? and these are more universal ones that relate to Maslow?s hierarchy of needs and to our creative hopes and dreams.

A well-known acronym for fear is:FEAR = False evidence appearing real

In other words, even though what we?re fearful of seems very real to us, it?s usually something we?ve made up in our heads, as opposed to something we?re facing in physical form. Studies on the stress hormone cortisol show that our bodies react to our thoughts regardless of what is actually in front of us. Our fears feel VERY real. And??they?re not.

SARK, author of Make Your Creative Dreams Real suggests you to try this acronym on instead:

Fill yourself up creatively ? Julia Cameron advocates something similar with her ?Artists?s Date? assignment in The Artist?s Way. What sparks your creativity? A long drive in the country? Making a vegetable soup? Meditation? Prayer?

Explore what stops you ? looking at your own unique methods of self-sabotage is a cornerstone of the Everyday Self-Care Workbook (http://www.genuinecoaching.com/esc-workbook.html), and of my upcoming book just for creative artists.

Accelerate movement ? Do something, anything, to combat the inertia of staying still. SARK advocates ?micro movements? that take anywhere from 5 seconds to 5 minutes to complete. Those micro movements are the building blocks for our creative dreams and most importantly, get us moving!!

Repeat ? luckily for us, this process continues as long as we?re up for it!

Courage is fear that has said its prayers. ? Dorothy Bernard

Save More Than GEICO on Car Insurance, Claims Reading PA Auto ...

Reading, PA (PRWEB) September 04, 2012

American Insuring Group, Ltd, an independent car insurance agency located near Reading, PA in Berks County claims a 6-to-1 price advantage over GEICO, State Farm, and other single-source automobile insurance providers. They are so confident of their price advantage that they offer a free dinner for taking their price challenge if they fail to save customers more money on car insurance than GEICO or any other company for equivalent coverage.

Customers ask why were so confident that we can give them a lower price on car insurance than GEICO, said David Ross, president. Its actually pretty simple. We offer price quotes from six highly competitive first-class insurers. Each one offers unique pricing advantages for certain types of cars, drivers, and accident histories. So its very likely that one of our six carriers will out-perform GEICO or any other single-source car insurance company. Thats why we call it our 6-to-1 price advantage.

American Insuring Group offers free online price quotes on truck and car insurance via their new website at http://www.aigltd.com. They also offer a free consultation to help car and truck owners determine if they have the right type of insurance protection for themselves and their families.

Ross has partnered with Berks County marketing, SEO, and web design firm Power Marketing International to reach new customers with their message of better prices on car insurance. Were proud to work with Dave Ross on this project, said PMI president, Alan Robezzoli. Ive seen how hard he and his team work to save money for their customers. Their customers love the attentive service and the price advantages they offer.

Three Simple Steps to Surviving the Paleo Diet - Hive Health Media

Here?s the thing about diets: diets don?t work. Weight loss is a mere matter of calories in verses calories out, and if you?re looking to lose weight as quickly as possible with as little fitness as possible, immediately close out of this article and register with MyFitnessPal.com to help you track your daily caloric intake.

Yes, that is the #1 best solution for weight loss.

But for those of you who are looking for something beyond weight loss, such as improved health, higher energy, increased athletic performance, clearer skin, and/or easier digestion, the Paleo diet is the answer to all of your health and fitness needs.

To put it short: the Paleo diet includes eating like our ancestors ? the caveman, our primal selves. The diet excludes gluten, dairy, legumes (beans and peanuts), processed foods, and most sugars in favor of organic meats, vegetables, fruits, nuts, eggs, natural sugars (honey and agave), and healthy oils. Since there is already an endless wealth of free Paleo resources on the web, relating to what the diet is, how and why the plan works, as well as recipes and shopping lists, I?m here to address another common concern with the Paleo diet: sticking with it.

Paleo is Not a Burden

Here?s my personal insight on following the Paleo diet: don?t make it a burden.? Following it as much as you can rather than 100% of the time will make the transition easier and the habit more likely to stick. If you have dinner plans with friends, order what you want from the menu. If you forgot to pack a chicken and veggies lunch, grab a sandwich at work. If you want a cupcake after dinner, go ahead and indulge. By thinking of Paleo as something to incorporate into your diet rather than a make-it-or-break-it plan, you?ll reap the healthy benefits without ever feeling like your ?cheating,? ?craving,? or ?bingeing.?

You?ll Learn to Love Paleo

Wouldn?t it be great if you could learn to love traffic? Learn to love taxes? Learn to love your boss? The great thing about Paleo is you learn to love it ? a miracle in the diet world. After following Paleo for only one week, a single non-Paleo meal will feel ? for lack of better terminology ? just plain gross. Begin Paleo by incorporating it as only 50% of your diet, you?ll be amazed at how quickly 50% becomes 60% becomes 70% and so on. Many Paleo-followers can only go a day or two off the plan without desperately wanting to get back on track (and feeling great). That?s right ladies and gentlemen, a diet you?ll actually miss when you?re off it.

Eat Fruit

Nothing bums me out more than low-carbers knocking fruit. Sure the sugar in fruit may prevent your body from going into weight-dropping ketosis, but if we learned anything from the Atkins diet, ketosis is not sustainable, and frankly, makes your breath stink. No one has ever gotten fat eating fruit. Fruit will cut your sugar cravings while you?re on the Paleo diet, making you less inclined towards unhealthy sweets (pastries, ice cream, oreos, etc). Eat a big bowl of watermelon after dinner, and tell me if you?re still craving chocolate.

Paleo is not for weight loss. I repeat: Paleo is NOT for weight loss. Weight loss is often a pleasant side effect, but it is slow coming, and there are much better plans for shedding a few for bikini season. Paleo is a service to your body, your health, your mind, and your skin; it?s an embrace of the beautiful foods produced solely from our earth. Welcome it into your life, and enjoy the many benefits.
