Wildfire shatters record for largest in New Mexico

A wildfire burning in the Gila National Forest consumed nearly 20,000 more acres in a day and is now, by far, the largest blaze on record in New Mexico, a fire incident spokesman told msnbc.com.

"It's certainly not a record we're happy with," Gerry Perry said in reporting that aerial infrared readings last night led to a new count: 170,272 acres, or 265 square miles, burned -- up from 152,000 acres on Tuesday.

The Whitewater-Baldy Complex Fire surpassed the 2011 Las Conchas Fire, which had been the largest on record in New Mexico at 157,000 acres. That blaze threatened property around Los Alamos National Laboratory, the nation's premier nuclear facility.

More than 1,200 firefighters and 12 helicopters from around the state are fighting the blaze.

Perry said continued extremely low humidity is making efforts against the fire difficult. The fire is at zero containment.

Two lightning-sparked fires merged last week to form the giant blaze, which has destroyed 12 cabins and seven small outbuildings.

One fire was first spotted May 9 and the second blaze was sparked May 16, but nearly all of the growth has come in recent days due to relentless winds. Officials also said a "record breaking dry air mass" and persistent drought in the region contributed to the fire's growth.

Those winds forced crews to the sidelines last week as the fire rapidly spread in an isolated area and charred several homes in the community of Willow Creek.

Evacuation orders for hundreds
Several hundred residents of Willow Creek and nearby Mogollon, a historic mining town, remain under evacuation.

Smoke has spread across New Mexico and parts of Arizona, putting cities as far away as Albuquerque under health alerts.

Perry said a shift in the winds Wednesday means that Las Cruces will probably see smoke soon.

Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., announced Tuesday that FEMA has approved New Mexico's request for fire management assistance declaration. Bingaman visited Reserve, N.M., Tuesday and was briefed by the U.S. Forest Service on the fire.

Under the declaration, the state is eligible for funding through the Fire Management Assistance Grant Program, which provides for the "mitigation, management, and control" of fires burning on publicly or privately owned forest or grasslands.

Also on Tuesday, Gov. Susana Martinez urged business affected by the fire to apply for low-interest Small Business Administration loans that could become available if enough applicants seek the help.

"As a result of this fire, small businesses are unquestionably feeling the impact, and I want to make sure that these businesses and their surrounding communities can take advantage of any assistance possible," Martinez said in a statement.

Dry and hot conditions in the Southwest have also fueled wildfires in other states, including Colorado. Hundreds of firefighters were at an 8-square-mile fire in western Colorado near that state's border with Utah, and a separate 4-square-mile blaze about 200 miles southwest of Denver.

Msnbc.com's Miguel Llanos and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Microsoft Develops 80" Wall-Mounted Tablet for Offices

Chief executive officer of Microsoft has got rid of numerous traditional office appliances such as pens, notepapers and a telephone. What he uses is a 80" "tablet" personal computer powered by Windows 9, which is not an exclusively built gadget, but is a prototype of a product that Microsoft actually wants to sell.

"Steve Ballmer has an 80" Windows 8 tablet in his office. He has got rid of his phone, he has got rid of his note paper. It is touch-enabled and it is hung on his wall. It is his whiteboard, his email machine and it is a device we're going to sell," said Frank Shaw, vice president of communications at Microsoft, in an interview with Wired.

Nothing particular was revealed about the device (e.g., what resolution does it have and what processor and graphics adapter does it run?), the only thing clear is that it is neither Microsoft's well-known Surface or recently announced Sharp Aquos Board. Still, this is a prototype of a device that replaced conventional office equipment and redefines what is currently known as office work.

When the product will be finalized, it will become commercially available, but Microsoft claims it will not be a consumer product at least initially. On the other hand, once something valuable and not too special-purpose is released, it finds its way to the consumer in case it is universal enough for the masses.

"It is not a consumer thing now, but we know historically that that's how all things start. The idea that there should be a screen that's not a computer, we will laugh at that in two years. Every screen should be touch, every screen should be a computer and should be able to see out as well as see in. That is the way the world is heading [and] those screens are going to be big, small, wall-sized and desk-sized," added Mr. Shaw.

Microsoft Windows 8 will be available later this year in three versions. When wall-mounted "tablets" with 80" screens are available is absolutely unknown.

Vatican bank chief ousted in no-confidence vote

(AP) ? The president of the Vatican bank was effectively ousted Thursday after receiving a unanimous vote of no-confidence from bank overseers for having leaked documents and failed to do his job at a critical time in the Holy See's efforts to show financial transparency, the Vatican and officials said.

Ettore Gotti Tedeschi has been a polarizing figure ever since he was named president of the bank, known as the Institute for Religious Works, or IOR, in 2009. He is under investigation for alleged money laundering by Italian magistrates, but the investigation isn't believed to have factored into the decision since the Vatican considers the probe to be motivated by outside political interests.

The Vatican said in a statement Thursday that the vote was taken because of Gotti Tedeschi's failure to fulfill the "primary functions of his office." He himself has told prosecutors that he barely paid attention to the bank's works, showing up only two days a week while tending to his primary position as head of Spain's Banco Santander's Italian unit in Milan.

In addition, Gotti Tedeschi was found to have leaked confidential documents to serve his personal and political interests, according to a source in the Vatican secretariat of state. The source requested anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss internal Vatican investigations. The Vatican is in the midst of a scandal over leaked documents and has begun a criminal investigation into the source of the leaks, as well as appointed a commission of cardinals to get to the bottom of it.

In the statement, the Vatican said the board had grown increasingly concerned about the governance of the bank and that the situation had deteriorated recently.

During a regularly scheduled board meeting Thursday, the five superintendents, who include the former No. 2 at Deutsche Bank, Ronaldo Hermann Schmitz, and Carl Anderson, head of the Knights of Columbus, a major U.S. Catholic fundraising organization, unanimously adopted a no-confidence motion and recommended that Gotti Tedeschi's mandate be terminated.

His fate isn't final. On Friday the cardinals who sit on the IOR's governing council are to meet to consider the board's decision. While it wasn't clear if they could ignore the no-confidence vote, the Vatican made clear the search was already on for a replacement.

"The council is now looking forward to search for a new and excellent president who will help the institute rebuild relationships between the institute and the financial community based on mutual respect based on internationally accepted banking standards," the IOR said.

The no-confidence vote comes at a critical time for the Holy See in its efforts to shed the IOR's image as a secretive tax haven battered by years of scandal.

The Holy See is heading into a July meeting of Moneyval, a Council of Europe committee that will determine whether it has complied with international norms to fight money laundering and terror financing. Transparency of the IOR's finances has been one of several criteria that the Moneyval evaluators have investigated.

It wasn't clear if the timing of Gotti Tedeschi's ouster was aimed at sending a message to the Moneyval investigators, but just last week the Holy See met with them to discuss the preliminary findings of their report.

Gotti Tedeschi has long painted himself as the symbol of Vatican financial transparency, but the vote Thursday indicated that his primary collaborators on the board had found him to be anything but. He was faulted for not keeping the board of superintendents apprised of the work of the bank, among other failings.

Recently, he raised eyebrows when he made a joke about Hitler, war and economics.

Gotti Tedeschi was a frequent contributor to the Vatican newspaper and went on a very public speaking tour extolling the benefits of a morality-based financial system and citing frequently from the pope's encyclical on the subject, "Charity in Truth."

Italian authorities placed Gotti Tedeschi and the IOR's top manager under investigation in September 2010 and seized ?23 ($30 million) from a Vatican bank account at the Rome branch of Credito Artigiano Spa, after the bank informed the Bank of Italy about possible violations of anti-money laundering norms.

Gotti Tedeschi and the Vatican have denied any wrongdoing, calling the investigation a misunderstanding. No charges have been filed, and the money was subsequently released after the Vatican passed a series of measures to combat money laundering and create a financial watchdog authority ? key requirements for the Moneyval process.

The Vatican bank was founded in 1942 by Pope Pius XII to manage assets destined for religious or charitable works. Located in a tower just inside the gates of Vatican City, it also manages the pension system for the Vatican's thousands of employees.

The bank is not open to the public. Depositors are usually limited to Vatican employees, religious orders and people who transfer money for the pope's charities.

The Vatican bank's finances have long been shrouded in secrecy. Most famously, it was implicated in a scandal over the collapse of the Banco Ambrosiano in the 1980s in one of Italy's largest fraud cases. Roberto Calvi, the head of Banco Ambrosiano, was found hanging from Blackfriars Bridge in London in 1982 in circumstances that remain mysterious.

Banco Ambrosiano collapsed following the disappearance of $1.3 billion in loans the bank had made to several dummy companies in Latin America. The Vatican had provided letters of credit for the loans.

While denying any wrongdoing, the Vatican bank agreed to pay $250 million to Ambrosiano's creditors.

Freedom of Speech, Bad Google Reviews and Your Small Business ...

Did you ever think that the first amendment to the United States Constitution may be hurting your small business?

freedom of speechUnfortunately for thousands of small businesses, people exercising their right to? freedom of speech can be a serious problem and is responsible for thousands of dollars in lost revenue!

You are probably wondering, what the heck is he talking about? Simply put, it is all about people exercising their right to free speech and posting negative things online about your business.

The Internet is a wide open billboard that allows people to go online and talk about their experiences with local businesses. As a business owner you need to be aware of what people are saying about your business, both good and bad. Not knowing may be costing you business and it is definitely fixable.

Ignoring bad reviews and comments online is costing you money!

Most small business owners are not even aware that when people search for their business online the first thing they see may be bad reviews. In many cases finding bad reviews is the difference between a prospect using you or moving on.

Online Shoppers are looking for validation before they buy!

You must understand that people like to use online reviews to validate their decision to buy or fly from you. The problem is, you may run a great business and provide an excellent service, yet a few disgruntled ex customers decided to trash you online and those bad reviews are in front of interested prospects when they search for you.

Here are the biggest problems for most local businesses? plagued with bad reviews.

Most small businesses that are being hurt by bad reviews are not even aware that they are there or feel helpless to act upon them. We have found that many of these businesses do not have a website or have a poorly optimized website that has poor rankings in the Google results. This means that when an interested prospect types your business name into Google they see bad reviews up top and no website to offset those bad reviews. A professional and well optimized website should always appear at the top of the search results for your name.

Most small businesses still have not claimed their Free Google places business listing. You have a business listing in Google and it is your responsibility to claim it and optimize it. If your unclaimed business listing has bad reviews you have no way to respond or gather positive reviews from satisfied customers to counter the bad reviews.

Poor reputation management. All of the local businesses do not have and review monitoring mechanisms in place to alert them when someone posts a review (good or bad) about their business online. When people post comments about your business you need to know about them right away so you can react. You cannot respond to reviews if you do not know they are there!

how to handle bad reviews about your businessHow can you exercise your first amendment rights and combat negative reviews online?

Freedom of speech works both ways and you can easily counter bad reviews by first knowing about them and where they are located online. If they are in Google Places you can respond once you claim your free business page.

Are You Embarrassed, Angry, or Both?

First of all, there are usually 2 primary emotions that occur when a business owner first learns about negative reviews. The first emotion is usually embarrassment. They are embarrassed that this is their business and people are getting a negative impression about how they conduct business. It is personal and a poor reflection on you as the owner.

Then anger sets in. How dare that lousy sob write those obviously false things about my business. We run a great business here and this is probably my competition trying to trash me! Maybe so, but the review is still there and you need to address it.

The problem is not always the bad reviews themselves, it is how they are displayed and viewed online. Let?s be honest here, everybody has a bad day and nobody is perfect. In fact, a Google Places page with 50 5 star reviews and nothing negative is kind of fishy looking and may cause a viewer to doubt the validity of the review sources. Read my post from several months ago about buying fake reviews in Google Places.

How Should You Handle Bad Reviews Online?

how to handle bad reviewsWhat Should You Do Next? First and foremost, deal with bad reviews or comments head on! DO NOT ignore bad reviews or hope that people won?t find them. If they are coming up people will see them and you will lose customers. The good news is, you can overcome them and stop losing customers by taking action now!

First of all, find out where they are and what they are saying?

If you do not have a website yet and bad reviews are the first thing popping up on Google for your business name, you have a serious problem. First of all, if someone is simply looking for directions to your business, a phone number, or some general info and instead of finding your website they find a slew of negative reviews, you probably just lost a customer.

Hire a professional asap and get those reviews pushed down the page by posting positive information like blog posts, positive reviews from satisfied customers and above all, your website. If your website is not appearing number 1 in Google for your business name, you have problems!

Claim your Google Places page! If you are not sure how to do it or don?t have time, hire a professional! You cannot respond to reviews if you do not have control of your Google Places business listing. Claiming your business listing also allows you to edit inaccurate information and create offers. If you have control over your business listing and keep it updated and professional looking it also is helpful to send satisfied customers there to post positive reviews.

DO NOT hire a review company to post positive reviews in Google Places. It is illegal and against Google?s rules. Buying fake reviews will eventually come back to haunt you and more and more savvy Internet surfers are able to spot fake reviews. Contact past customers and encourage current customers to go online. Put a review page on your website and email a link to your review page to past customers. Remember, it only takes 5 positive reviews to push a negative on to page 2 of the Google reviews pages.

Respond professionally to all negative reviews! Do not respond right away if a negative review makes you angry. Your emotional response will be seen by everyone and you may end up looking like a total jackass. Always respond in a courteous manner and try to discover who this person is and try to make things right. In some cases you may have really screwed up and the reviewer just wants some kind of justice. Handle it professionally and you may win back a customer and have a positive review replace a negative. Above all, online shoppers will be impressed that you are proactive and trying to make things right!

Bottom line: If you really care about your business, you must know exactly what people are saying about you at all times. People are always exercising their freedom of speech and you should also. You cannot address a problem unless you are aware that it exists. Do not ignore negative comments or reviews online because they will not go away and thousands of potential customers will go away!

Two Dreadful Cancer Affecting Human Lives

'; div.innerHTML = summary; } //]]> Two Dreadful Cancer Affecting Human Lives Two Dreadful Cancer Affecting Human Lives

Cancer is such a disease that may affect any of the body part and its cell. It is caused when the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in our body cells get damaged. DNA comprises of particular instructions that tend our body cells when to multiply and split allowing them to grow in a controlled manner. If it gets interrupted then these cells develop rapidly and in uncontrolled manner. Such rapid and fast growth causes to form a puffiness which is referred as tumor. Ultimately this tumor become cancerous and starts affecting our body parts. In this article I will be discussing two dangerous types of cancer in details.

Brain Cancer : - The brain is formed by several varied kinds of cells. Cancers occur as one type of cell modifies and alters its usual attributes. Once altered, the cells formulate and increase in unnatural way.

When these abnormal cells grow, they are converted into a collection of infected cells, known as tumor. Abnormal growth of cells or tumor in brain leads to this kind of cancer. It initiate from the primary brain cells, from the cell that create other brain components, or from the other cancerous cell from different organ that have extended towards brain through bloodstream. It develops and multiplies in a rapid speed, damaging healthy cells by gaining their space, nutrients as well as blood. Tumors that develop in brain do not extend to any other part of the body. But it is inherently serious and life threatening. This cancer is very horrible and frequently turns out to be disastrous. Still there are many people who know very little about this harmful disease.

Prostate Cancer : - Prostate cancer is very common in North America. At least 80% of the adult man of 80 years and above suffers from this dreadful disease. Chances to develop this kind of cancer depend and increase with age. It can be termed as hereditary also as if it has developed in any of our blood relatives then the risk of suffering this disease becomes higher. After non melanoma skin cancer it is the second most common cancer diagnosed in United States and Canada.

Prostate is a gland found in male reproductive system, located below the urinary bladder, in front of the rectum. Its function is to secrete the fluids that defend, cares, and nitrifies sperm cells in semen. There are several types of prostate cancer and almost all such cancer formulates from the gland cells. The most common type is known as adenocarcinoma. At initial stage this cancer do not exhibit much of symptoms but it can be traced in later stages by observing the prostate enlargement. It is also possible not to experience any symptoms even if it is a life threatening prostate cancer. It is better to undergo regular checkups because it is always easy to cure fist stage cancer (T-1) and have a 90% cure rate. The rate marginally diminishes with the late detection (T-4) of tumor as there will remain a very little option for treatment and chances of cure at such stage.

Let it be brain cancer or prostate cancer each type of cancer is dissimilar and all patients are not same. Proper treatment for any individual should be hashed out with a physician or doctor. It is always good to take cancer advice from a cancer specialist. Cancer is a fatal disease and we should take utmost care of our health to stay away from the risk of developing such tumors in our body.

Advice On Home Renovation And Home Improvement | Diamond ...

Consider your neighborhood when making outdoor home improvements. Does your vision fit in? Do you really want to stand out like a sore thumb? You might prefer to have your projects noticed for their value and quality rather than their eccentricity.

If you add some functional items at the entry of your house, you can make the space more useful. A small table with organizational items to place keys and mail on, as well as seating to remove shoes, a coat rack and a mirror could make a big difference. These additions can also add to the organization in your living space and reduce mess.

Remember to consider landscaping when thinking about home improvement projects. Your lawn is seen first by people coming to your home. Trim the grass and design landscaping that features both flowering plants and shrubs to create the best looking lawn in town.

When improving the exterior of your home, you can save money and add security by installing motion detecting lights. These type of lights are only active when someone needs them, so you save money on electricity bills. Motion detecting lights are also a crime deterrent and can prevent burglaries.

Installing new ceramic tile in the kitchen or bath can be quick and easy. Choose either tiles with unique designs or a solid color scheme for a more elegant, put-together look. This home improvement project can really increase the decor of your home.

A good home improvement tip is to get a professional opinion before you ever try to fix anything serious on your own. The small cost of an initial consultation will seem nominal when compared to the costs of having a preventable mishap repaired. Consulting with a professional is really the best way to avoid making costly mistakes.

When installing tiles in places that have moisture, be sure to use cement backer boards. This helps keep moisture from getting to the drywall. When water interacts with the dry wall, damaging mold and mildew can form on the wall.

Finishing your home?s basement is, possibly, the best improvement to make. You can increase the total square footage of livable space available to your family by finishing a basement. Shop around for the best values to keep costs down. Finishing your basement can improve your homes value upwards of 30%.

Did you know that you can plant grown flowers instead of bulbs and seeds? By planting flowers that are already grown, you can add some instant beauty and value to your home. Mature flowers can add instant color and vibrancy to the outside of your house, and they are effective in filling gaps in your landscape. Seedlings still need time to grow, and may not add to your landscape for a few months until they produce blooms. Buyers tend to be more amicable to a home that will require less work once purchased.

Make certain all caulking is up to par. Make sure you look at the caulk located around the sink and bath. When holes erupt in caulking, water can seep through into walls and create a very moldy situation, especially threatening to those with respiratory ailments. When water gets through cracks or holes in your caulking, it can head straight for the floor, causing rot. Eliminate any old caulking before adding new caulking and make sure the area is clean and dry. The new calking will only adhere to the new surface, if it is properly prepared, to form a watertight seal.

As you may remember from the start of this piece, knowing your limits in regards to home improvement is important. The tips in this article will help you avoid mistakes that could cost you money or even cause serious injury. There is certainly no shame in seeking help from others.

Wall Street girds for Facebook frenzy

Wall Street and investors around the globe girded for a frenzy for Facebook shares with investors hungry for a piece of the social network's share offering expected to be launched on Friday.

In the past few days, Facebook boosted the estimated price for the shares, placing a value on the hugely popular site at around a whopping $100 billion, and added to the number of shares being offered from insiders.

With a definitive price still not set, Facebook estimated shares to be offered at between $34 to $38 per share, translating to a value of $93-104 billion for the company.

The Wall Street Journal said Facebook -- which has 900 million members worldwide -- was nearing a final offering price of $38 per share, which would value the company at $104 billion, the highest ever for a US firm at an IPO.

London bookmakers were anticipating a stampede for shares. At the betting firm Spreadex, clients have been speculating that shares could rise above $56 after their first day.

"Our market on the percentage change in the price of Facebook shares after the first day's trading has seen appetite from clients in buying on the price as the big day approaches, moving the spread up from 30-35 percent earlier in the week to 35-40 percent," Spreadex spokesman Andy MacKenzie said.

Spreadex noted that among other tech IPOs, LinkedIn rose 109 percent the first day while Groupon surged 31 percent. Social game maker Zygna lost ground on its first day.

But MacKenzie noted that "we have had some customers holding back based on their belief that Facebook shares may well fall in value after the furor over the initial launch has died down."

Lou Kerner, founder of The Social Internet Fund, said he expects a strong response.

"US institutional demand has been good, the retail and global demand has been overwhelming," he said.

London-based Hargreaves Lansdown Stockbrokers said Facebook may have a hard time living up to lofty expectations but pointed out that it is "a relatively developed company which can display 'real' income and profit."

"There are extremely high expectations for the company's prospects and perhaps on that basis it deserves the punchy valuation it has been given, the brokerage said in a note to clients.

"It is then down to the company to convince investors and analysts that the confidence was well founded and that Facebook will be mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Apple and Google in the years to come."

The excitement about social networks was highlighted separately when Pinterest, a bulletin-board style sharing website, attracted a $100 million investment led by Japanese online giant Rakuten, with existing investors Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, and FirstMark Capital, and "a number of angel investors."

Under the share plan, Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg will hold 55.8 percent of the voting power, down slightly from an estimated 57.3 percent. The 28-year-old controls the firm through a dual class stock structure and certain shares that give him a "proxy" for voting.

The net proceeds to the company were estimated at $6.4 billion, the filing with regulators said.

At $38 per share, the IPO would raise $18.4 billion, one of the largest on record.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the rise in shares announced this week comes from a number of insiders cashing out bigger portions of their stake, including Goldman Sachs, the equity firm Tiger Global Management and Peter Thiel, one of the first Facebook investors.

The Journal said 57 percent of shares will be from insiders, which is an unusually high percentage. Under Wall Street rules, these investors would have to wait six months to sell any shares not offered at the IPO.

Fujifilm FinePix XP170 rugged camera pays a visit to the FCC, leaves raincoat behind

Fujifilm FinePix XP170 rugged camera pays a visit to the FCC, leaves raincoat behind

It was only a matter of time before Fujifilm's latest ruggedized shooter, the FinePix XP170, made a quick stop by the FCC offices and, well, it's about that time. The filings don't reveal many details we didn't already know, meaning you're still getting those WiFi sharing features to Android / iOS and that 14-megapixel CMOS sensor with 1080p video capabilities to take on your adventures. At this rate it's safe to say that you better have those 280 bucks ready, as this rugged Fuji's next stop is sure to be the retail shelves. We don't think FCC chairman, Julius Genachowski, would mind you peeking at the black and white files, so hit the source link below if you're interested in doing so.

Visualized: Second-gen Samsung Series 9 gets torn down to its ultra-slim components

Chances are you're no stranger to the Samsung Series 9 -- the first generation stood out for its slimness, and the most current version is an impressive 28 percent thinner. If you're wondering how those notebooks can be so dang skinny, your curiosity will be satisfied by Samsung's teardown of a 13-inch model. A thinner LCD and a customized main board contribute to the machine's slight profile, as do a 40 percent slimmer touchpad and a built-in lithium-polymer battery. As is so often the case, the pictures speak much louder than words, so hop over to Samsung's blog for a gander.

HTC One V headed to the U.S. this summer

Android Central

Alongside its Droid Incredible 4G LTE announcement, HTC also revealed that the One V, it's new entry-level smartphone, will be headed to the U.S. from a "variety of partners" this summer. No specific dates, prices or networks were announced. but the One V is a good bet for pre-paid or regional carriers.

Inside its chinny, Legend-like chassis, the One V sports a 1GHz single-core Snapdragon CPU, 512MB of RAM and a WVGA (800x480) SuperLCD2 display. As you might imagine, it's running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and HTC Sense 4 on the software side. There's also a 5MP HTC ImageSense camera, which we found performed better than any entry-level smartphone camera we'd tested, even putting the Galaxy Nexus's 5MP shooter to shame.

For more on the One V, be sure to check out our full review of the international version. We've also got the full press release from HTC after the break.

Thousands march as Japan shuts off nuclear power

TOKYO (AP) ? Thousands of Japanese marched to celebrate the switching off of the last of their nation's 50 nuclear reactors Saturday, waving banners shaped as giant fish that have become a potent anti-nuclear symbol.

Japan was without electricity from nuclear power for the first time in four decades when the reactor at Tomari nuclear plant on the northern island of Hokkaido went offline for mandatory routine maintenance.

After last year's March 11 quake and tsunami set off meltdowns at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant, no reactor halted for checkups has been restarted amid public worries about the safety of nuclear technology.

"Today is a historic day," Masashi Ishikawa shouted to a crowd gathered at a Tokyo park, some holding traditional "koinobori" carp-shaped banners for Children's Day that have become a symbol of the anti-nuclear movement.

"There are so many nuclear plants, but not a single one will be up and running today, and that's because of our efforts," Ishikawa said.

The activists said it is fitting that the day Japan stopped nuclear power coincides with Children's Day because of their concerns about protecting children from radiation, which Fukushima Dai-ichi is still spewing into the air and water.

The government has been eager to restart nuclear reactors, warning about blackouts and rising carbon emissions as Japan is forced to turn to oil and gas for energy.

Japan now requires reactors to pass new tests to withstand quakes and tsunami and to gain local residents' approval before restarting.

The response from people living near nuclear plants has been mixed, with some wanting them back in operation because of jobs, subsidies and other benefits to the local economy.

The mayor of Tomari city, Hiroomi Makino, is among those who support nuclear power.

"There may be various ways of thinking but it's extremely regrettable," he said of the shutdown.

Major protests, like the one Saturday, have been generally limited to urban areas like Tokyo, which had received electricity from faraway nuclear plants, including Fukushima Dai-ichi.

Before the nuclear crisis, Japan relied on nuclear power for a third of its electricity.

The crowd at the anti-nuclear rally, estimated at 5,500 by organizers, shrugged off government warnings about a power shortage. If anything, they said, with the reactors going offline one by one, it was clear the nation didn't really need nuclear power.

Whether Japan will suffer a sharp power crunch is still unclear.

Electricity shortages are expected only at peak periods, such as the middle of the day in hot weather, and critics of nuclear power say proponents are exaggerating the consequences to win public approval to restart reactors.

Hokkaido Electric Power Co. spokesman Hisatoshi Kibayashi said the shutdown was completed late Saturday.

The Hokkaido Tomari plant has three reactors, but the other two had been halted earlier. Before March 11 last year, the nation had 54 nuclear reactors, but four of the six reactors at Fukushima Dai-ichi are being decommissioned because of the disaster.

Yoko Kataoka, a retired baker who was dancing to the music at the rally waving a small paper carp, said she was happy the reactor was being turned off.

"Let's leave an Earth where our children and grandchildren can all play without worries," she said, wearing a shirt that had, "No thank you, nukes," handwritten on the back.

Eli Manning SNL Highlight Videos

We all knew he was killer quarterback but who knew that Eli Manning was also a freaking comedian. The first time Saturday Night Live host did an awesome job and proved there is more to him than just football. If you missed the show no worries I have some highlight videos that will make you feel like you were there. He may have felt like he was out of his element but those of us watching the show so could not tell at all. Eli killed as the host and I admit that I was a little skeptical about Manning hosting the show. Clearly though I was oh so wrong. I promised you some videos and I never disappoint my readers. Let?s kick things off with the opening monologue. Eli gives some advice on where to eat in NYC however his suggestions might surprise you. Not too bad huh! Next up was one of my favorite sketches of the night. It was called ?Little Brothers? and it features Manning as a volunteer in a Little Brothers program. It is not your typical volunteer program that is for sure. Eli took the stand in the sketch ?Text Message Evidence?. It may [...]

Bending Over Backwards for the Broken Printer I Refuse to Replace [Just Me?]

There are a lot of lazy ways I'll avoid dealing with one gadget problem or another: I stream all my TV shows through my iPad, because I can't get around to setting up the 17" Sony that's been boxed up in my closet since I moved apartments last summer. When one lamp stops working—and I don't mean the bulb goes out, I mean there is something wrong with the lamp itself, a chronic situation I'll save for another post—I'll put off seeking repair and make do with a dim desk area. (AP) ? When Louis C.K. released his comedy special "Live at the Beacon Theater" by himself on his website for $5, it was little more than a cautiously optimistic experiment.

Less than two weeks later, it had reaped more than $1 million. Already among the most respected stand-ups in the country, Louis C.K. was suddenly a new media trailblazer, too.

On Tuesday, the Webby Awards announced Louis C.K. is their "person of the year" for setting "a new precedent for distribution." Comedians Aziz Ansari and Jim Gaffigan have since similarly released albums online.

The Webbys, which celebrate Internet achievement, announced the winners of its 16th annual awards on Tuesday. The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, which present the awards, shared the winners with The Associated Press shortly before they were to make an official announcement.

The awards spanned the breath of the Internet, from mobile apps like Instagram and Pinterest that have disrupted social media, to entertainers charting new digital ground, like Louis C.K. and Bjork.

Bjork was named artist of the year. Last year, the Icelandic musician released the album "Biophilia" as a multimedia presentation of music and apps.

She was among the special recognitions named by the Webbys, which also cited the photo app Instagram as breakout of the year. It was recently acquired by Facebook for $1 billion.

"It's been a huge year of change," said David-Michel Davies, executive director of the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences, a group of about 1,000 Web experts and Internet professionals.

Also specially honored were Juliette Lewis and Graydon Sheppard, who share the award for best actress for the viral video "S--- Girls Say." The video, which parodies common expressions, has been watched more than 16.2 million times on YouTube and spawned a viral sensation of countless similar videos. Sheppard, a male comic, appears in drag in the video.

In more than 130 regular categories, the Webbys give two winners per category: an official Webby award and a "people's voice" pick chosen from online votes.

Ferrell, who co-founded the comedy website Funny Or Die, won best individual performance for a video in which he reprised his impression of President George W. Bush, reacting to Osama Bin Laden's death.

The Onion won for best humor website and its video arm, the Onion Network, earned best writing in an online video for its satirical morning TV show video: "How to Get a Guy to Notice You While You're Having Sex With Him."

The pinboard-style website Pinterest won for best social media app, as well as a people's voice award for best functioning visual design. Best music app went to the streaming service Spotify, which Davies said typified "the intersection we're seeing between social and entertainment."

HBO Connect won for best TV website. The New Yorker's website won for best editorial writing.

One new category, people's special achievement for social change, went to Facebook. The award, which was voted for online, honors "important Internet work that played an integral role in advancing and organizing the masses."

The awards will be handed out in a May 21 event at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York. Patton Oswalt will host the awards, whose winners are famously restricted to five-word acceptance speeches.

A week ago, the Twitterverse got better acquainted with the marital troubles of Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders, thanks to the fact that he decided to tweet about it.

Since then, his estranged wife, Pilar, has been arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault.? Deion has been cited, but not arrested, for assault.

Over the weekend, a piano teacher who witnessed part of the interaction told WFAA-TV that Deion, not Pilar, seemed to be the aggressor.

?I heard glass breaking, and Deion was shouting at the top of his lungs, over and over again, ?Get out of my house, get out of my house!?? Lisa Thomas told WFAA (via Robert Littal of BlackSportsOnline.com).

Thomas, who was there to give a piano lesson to one of Deion?s children, left as the police arrived.? She believed that the police were aggressive with Pilar.

?That?s what I found strange,? Thomas said.? ?They hadn?t even interviewed them, and they were pushing her out like she was some criminal, and they said, ?You stay outside,? and just said, ?Do not come back in this house.??

Thomas was surprised to learn that Pilar, not Deion, was arrested.? ?I was flabbergasted,? Thomas said. ?This can not be right. It?s not right.? It?s so wrong.? Now way she deserved to go to jail.?

The authorities did not take a statement from Thomas, and the Prosper, Texas police department did not respond to a request from WFAA for an explanation.
