28 New Zealand gold miners rescued after fire

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? Twenty-eight miners were rescued from a New Zealand gold mine Tuesday after a fire trapped the men underground for up to seven hours.

A truck engine caught fire early Tuesday at the Trio mine in the North Island town of Waihi. Mine officials said the ventilation system pumped smoke through the mine and it could be seen coming out the vent shaft.

Initially, 28 men were trapped about 150 meters (500 feet) underground in safety chambers. After more than 5 hours, 13 men taking refuge in two safety chambers were rescued. After seven hours, the remaining men in a third chamber were also rescued.

Mine spokesman Kit Wilson said one man was being checked by medical officials for suspected smoke inhalation but the rest are fine.

"Apparently they are all in good spirits and are raring to go home and have a sleep," he said.

The men were two hours from finishing a 10-hour overnight shift when the fire broke out.

Wilson said it's not yet clear what sparked the fire in the diesel engine. He said diesel vehicles regularly enter the mine.

The mine is owned by Denver-based Newmont, one of the world's largest gold producers. Newmont has 43,000 employees and contractors in a number of countries.

Linda Willoughby, another mine spokesperson, said mine officials were in telephone contact with the trapped miners throughout their ordeal. She said that unlike some coal mines that contain volatile methane gas, the hardrock mine faced no threat of an explosion.

Willoughby said the men followed their training after the fire by taking refuge in the underground chambers. Wilson added that many of the miners at first thought the incident was a drill.

Google Maps adds all 17 of the?Smithsonian Institution's?museums to its growing list of 10,000 important indoor spaces.

Now you can use your smartphone or tablet to navigate the sometimes overwhelming galleries, arcades, and avenues of some of America's most important institutions.

Building on a project to map important indoor spaces begun in November, the additional maps include all 2.7 million square feet of the Smithsonian properties in and around Washington, D.C., from the Castle, as the main Smithsonian building is known, to the National Portrait Gallery to the zoo. Yep. Now you can use your Android-powered phone to move from the gorilla habitat to the?coatimundis. (And who wouldn't, given the chance?)

To gain access online, users can search for the museums individually, or they can simply zoom into them from a Google Map of the area.

In addition to the Smithsonian museums, Google has also added San Francisco's de Young, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Cincinnati Museum Center, the Indianapolis Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History to the growing list of more than?10,000?important indoor spaces around the world that have been mapped. (These already ran the gamut from Japan's Narita International Airport to Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas to London's National Portrait Gallery.

One might ask why ? why map something inside that you're going to walk anyway? Used poorly, it could perhaps mediate, or even replace, the immediate experience of museum going. But used smartly, visitors can use such tools to achieve a number of aims.

To plan trips. Only the luckiest visitors, or the most manic, have the time, not to mention the mental fortitude, necessary to fully investigate a major museum. Such a mapping system can help you prioritize, order your visit, and plan how to move from one part of a museum to another, or from one institution in a city to another.

To improve understanding. It can also give students and researchers another tool to understand what they are studying, whether it's history, zoology, art, or transportation. It can provide you with a visualization tool that will bring alive a subject such as American history, that can get rather abstract at times.

Mapping important indoor spaces is part of Google's drive to capture more of the world's information and meshes nicely with another initiative, the Google Art Project, which allows users to visit the art of important museums and galleries. These range from the Frick Collection in New York to the Smithsonian's own American Art Museum to the Acropolis Museum in Athens.

Other museums that Google plans to add to their indoor mapping program soon include SF MOMA, The Phillips Collection, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and the National WWII Museum in New Orleans.

A new analyst report has revealed that Wintek, the current supply chain partner for Apple?s touch panels is experiencing a steep decline in sales. The report states that Wintek has experienced one of its steepest declines on record. The report also states that the decline is certainly not down to poor demand for Apple products but more likely a sign that Apple has changed technology for its panels.

Tom Cruise Divorce: Katie Holmes Stalked By Scientology Minions?

The impending Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes divorce apparently has the actress feeling uneasy and convinced the Church of Scientology now views her as a threat.

As such, Holmes believes the church put a team on her tail.

Katie reportedly believes that in recent weeks, as discord between herself and Tom grew and they began living apart - even while both were in New York City in mid-June - Scientology higher-ups have been following her every move.

It's unclear if this is in fact the case, but Scientology has been linked to such activity for years, and sources say "mysterious" men have photographed Katie when she's out, with vehicles spotted near her apartment around the clock.

A white Cadillac Escalade and black Mercedes SUV have been outside her place for the past week. Again, it's unclear who, if anyone, is tailing Katie Holmes.

The actress filed for sole custody of Suri in New York last week, a move Tom allegedly had no idea was coming. His ties to Scientology are said to be a big reason.

It's unclear what "threat" Katie would pose. She's given no indication of trying to expose anything or portray it negatively; she likely just wants to shield her daughter from the controversial religion and be done with it.

New York courts are more inclined than those in California to award sole legal custody to one parent or the other when there is conflict.

She has been setting up residence there in recent weeks, preparing for the move.

If she is being stalked by Scientologists, that would certainly bolster her case in court. Katie, 33, wed Tom, 49, in 2006, a few months after Suri was born.
